Welcome!
If I’m not back in five minutes, just wait longer
It's a pleasure to briefly play your host. So who is the nomadscientist? Mark T. Duncan — father, scientist, and concerned citizen of these United States. I plan to write about science, society, and from time to time, throw in some personal stories. Triple S: Science, Society, Story.
As a fun bonus, I also hope to develop some home science projects to share with you all. It’s exciting for me to explore new ideas and hopefully I’ll have some interesting results to share with you. Suggestions welcome!
A little more about me. I loved math and history as a teenager, but was duped into pursuing engineering because it was more practical (half-kidding). While I was studying that at UCLA in the 2000s, I became increasingly fascinated by technologies emerging in biotech — gene therapy, tissue engineering, and microbial engineering. That led me to do a PhD in the Bio/Chemical Engineering Department at Northwestern University.
After 6 years of a love/hate relationship with academia, I left NU for startup life and joined Cue Health in San Diego, CA in 2015. I also started a family and have two wonderful children, Sam and Julia. As of 2024, I once again reside in the Midwest. That wasn’t exactly my plan, but life happens, and we can’t always neatly arrange things as we’d like. More on that later. For now, I am focused on building something valuable to human health with some great colleagues, and I hope I can share part of that journey as well.
Anyways, welcome! I hope you’ll stick around as I figure this thing out.
